Poetry Corner: Nayyirah Waheed

So I’ve been feeling pretty crappy lately, guys – I’m not gonna lie. I’m completely exhausted – much of which is due to a long-running break-up scenario. But a friend at work recently introduced me to an incredible writer called Nayyirah Waheed – also known as ‘the most famous poet on Instagram’. And she’s been helping me get through it.

This woman’s words are literally like cocoa butter for the soul – they melt into the mind, soothing, restorative. And I don’t even like poetry! When I was in Sri Lanka a few years back, I had an amazing massage that concluded with warm, fragrant oil being poured over my head: slowly, carefully, lovingly. Waheed’s words feel like the literary equivalent of that sensorial experience.

Scrolling through her Instagram page, I stumbled across three beautiful poems that perfectly encapsulate and minister to my situation in the most stunningly eloquent way. I decided to share them with you, in case you could also do with some words of hope and healing right about now. And if that certain someone is reading this – and you know who you are – I hope you find some comfort in them too.
